12 Steps: Finding Balance in Recovery

Balance is one of the key elements to recovery,
and most people coming into treatment are pretty well out of balance. One of the big things that comes into recovery
is to begin to explore the things that aren’t so great about oneself, the things that perpetuated
the dysfunction, and that can be a pretty depressing process. Certainly we don’t want people to leave treatment
so depressed that they want to go relapse. What we want to do is introduce them to the
things that will help regain balance in their life, looking at what are the good character
traits or assets that they possess. It’s not about what a bad person you are because you
are an addict or an alcoholic. You have a problem, but you also have some wonderful
things about you that have just been eclipsed by that problem. The fellowship of the 12 Steps and the 12
Step recovery community is a huge part of creating that balance. Having structure in
one’s day, being accountable to be somewhere every day is important for balance. We also give them the opportunity to explore
spirituality as part of their balance. We bring those things into the education component,
really just as an opportunity to have thought-provoking discussions with their peers or with their
counselor about what things are missing from their lives and how can they begin to put
those things back into place.
