Auckland Clip 6: On Crippling Guilt

And I met lots of people who were suicidal because of that but also unwilling to take care of themselves, you know because they were so guilty about who they were … and their mode of being in the world that they just felt that they weren’t worth the damn trouble, you know, and, well, and they all had their own particular reasons for believing that their own failures, their own improper sacrifices, let’s say, their own acts of individual malevolence; but they’re summed up in a lovely metaphorical manner,
a horrifying metaphorical manner, in those ancient stories and those stories explain to us, too – why as well that our consciences don’t sit well with us, and why we always feel that there’s something undone that we should be doing in the world which is a much better pathway to take, by the way, than to degenerate into nihilism and catastrophe and so and that’s really cool too – it’s like well, you should treat yourself like you’re someone responsible for helping and the first question is “Well, why don’t you?” and the answer is – well, there’s a lot wrong with you you know and it’s hard to exercise enough love and care in a deep and non-naive way to care properly for something like that but, you know, you do it for people that you love, despite their inadequacies, and – there is this idea that there is a spark of divinity within us and it is possible that the fact that you have that spark of divinity (with you) within you also means that you have the capability to withstand that terrible vulnerability; that’s what I was trying to get at in Chapter 1 – which was to stand up straight with your shoulders back that you could actually voluntarily accept the onslaught of the tragedy of being and that you can constrain the proclivity for malevolence that’s part of you and that’s part of the world, and in that – you can discover your own value, your own intrinsic value in your own nobility and all of that might be more powerful than the forces of vulnerability and malevolence themselves which I also happen to believe and I think that that is in some sense the fundamental hallmark of faith and so, Chapter 2 and, to some degree, Chapter 3 wishes to surround yourself with people who want the best for you is a it’s an encouragement to assume, to act out the proposition that even if life is as difficult as it seems to be and if you’re as vulnerable and weak in a fundamental sense as you definitely are and characterized by this terrible propensity for the infliction of voluntary suffering on yourself and others and that destructive tendency that there’s still something within you that’s so remarkable and so aligned with with order and being in the proper manner that you can climb above that, let’s say like Abel, and that you can make the proper sacrifices and that you can set yourself right and you can set your family right and you can set the world right and that the mere possibility that that might occur, that that might be within the realm of potential – means that you have a moral obligation to exercise the responsibility to take care of yourself as if you’re something that matters and that if you did that properly – it might turn out that: what you did would matter, that it would matter to you, that it would be meaningful in the way that things that matter are meaningful and that it would matter to everyone around you

We are praying for your complete recovery. Greetings from Brazil.

  2. Because you’re a believer in the KING of Kings and LORD of Lords, his angels protect you from all harm. And no weapon formed against you Mr. Peterson, will prosper… We lift you up in prayer.

  3. My brother, find strength in the Lord. You are a unique and wonderful light to this world.

God’s not done with you yet.

  4. Weird, how Jordan is talking about accepting tragedy of being, yet has been using drugs, even tho he said he is not using them after that magic diet.
Liar, hypocrite and drug addict… But keep taking your damn pills, bucko, what rule was that again?

  5. This is your kind of (proper) fight against compelled speech. https://www.nbcnews.com/feature/nbc-out/virginia-teacher-sues-school-after-being-fired-not-using-transgender-n1060876

  6. Glad we can all think about what's wrong with ourselves right now. What a time to live in. Everything at our fingertips and no struggle compared to literally anyone in human history.

  7. Your ability to use your immense intellect when dealing with the spiritual in a rational mannor makes you nearly invincible to souless ideologies. Keep on fighting.

  8. I agree with him 99% of the time. The 1% with which I don’t agree, am afraid, tells me that he’s the pragmatic guy who will say blacks suffer in slavery because of their own fault. I think that the 1% tells me that he thinks that, “they, the blacks, don’t deserve special treatment. They should stand on their own foundation.” Even though of course African Americans didn’t start with a foundation here and has been prevented from standing at all for a very long time. I am afraid that a great thinker like him will let me down in that one area about which I care so much.

  9. Dear 'Uncle' Jordan:
I'm glad to see you are ok! I wish you a swift and fully recovery.
    Kindest regards from Mexico.

  10. I would like to say categorically that Dr. Jordan Peterson is one of the best people I think I’ve ever listened to. It hurts me to think that Dr. Peterson, someone who is so well spoken and an articulate HUMAN on such a high level has been hiding in a university away from the world for so long. I hope to god this man never goes forgotten. I pray for you Dr. Jordan Peterson!

  11. This book really changed my life, I recommend 12 Rules For Life for anyone, this is a MUST read: https://amzn.to/2Os3lsL

  12. What is someone else's guilt was put on you, because you've been guilty before so why should they be guilty if they can use you as a scapegoat? That's bullshit. That was my day today.

  13. And this is happening when I'm trying to do the right thing. It's like, I feel, like when your trying to be good, people hate it and want to keep you down, understand?

  14. So, if they don't want the best for me, I should just leave, right? Right. Thanks Doc. I wish you a speedy recovery as well as your wife. Peace and love to you. Thanks for sharing.

  15. We believe in you as much as you believe in us. If nobody told you they love you today allow me to be the first. I love You Mr. Peterson you've impacted my life for the better and I hope you'll allow us to do the same.
    God bless Jordan Peterson.

  16. His name is not Jordan Peterson, it is Peter Jordanson! Don't fall for the lies. Wake up and accept the objective truth!

  17. Get well Peter Jordanson! We need your not overly simplistic views in this world invaded by marxists thinking those damn trans people deserves any special rights. Fuckem.

  18. You people can are seriously fucked up pathological liars guessed you knew and guessed wrong stop trying to defend dumbass you look like freaking idiots on top of it

  19. Mr. Peterson have you ever commented on what you think Jung would have to say about GOOGLE and its effect on our culture and civilization? Its relationship to the psyche that he feared could go bad and possibly destroy man's world? I would love to hear your comments. You have given me and many more people hope for ourselves as individuals. Thank you for that sir. Bless you.

  20. Hey Jordan, I have the perfect location for your white ethnostate, here are the coordinates: 48°52.6′S 123°23.6′W. Its Point Nemo, the most remote place on Earth. Clearly a win win situation for everyone. There's no land, but I have a solution: you guys can do like the red ants do when they experience floods and crumple yourselfes together in a floating white male mass (all wearing jockstraps so your penises don't touch each other) that will kepp you guys going. And the only thing that you will ever have to interact too are impure non-white fishs and sea water, but thats better that what you guys have to put up here, right? PepeLaugh

  21. Don't know where I've been for the last few weeks, but I just heard of your news. Love & prayers to you and your wife. Take good care of yourself, and remember; you have millions of people wishing nothing but the best for you.

  22. despite all the problems you got Jordan Peterson….that…there's a time you want to give up…..you dare to question the creator
because of whats happening….to you and to your family…but you didn't question the creator….instead you continue helping the people….and you never stop doing good deeds to save life…..any kind of attack they throw on you is…..not gonna work….because you have strong mind…..good spirit….

Jordan….think what you want to happen….and it will granted…never give up…..the CREATOR didn't give up on you

  23. Was too late for the story. keep it strong, you know how it goes, you know you have too be strong. I am just a guy, but hey. neither anyone wants to see you in trouble

  24. Dear Professor Peterson,

I love the references to the one true book of all time, the Bible, you are so right about so much that you speak about. My heart goes out to you as a fellow soul on the path of life, and I want to share something with you, as I have many people to whom I have met in life. The born again experience is the ticket out of defeat and darkness. It was designed for us by God from Genesis 3:15 right after the fall. We can bruise the devil's or darkness's head as we are submitted to God. Jesus in us and us in him… we must be buried with him, in baptism in Jesus Name. That is us in him… then he Baptizes us with the Holy Ghost (evidenced with speaking in other tongues), that raises us to newness in life. That is him in us. It is so beautiful and I am so happy to share with you. You are a sincere man and are honest so give it an honest effort in checking it out. I wrote you this on another video you made and am going to share it with you again now on this one.. thank you for listening.

    Dear Professor Peterson,

I really appreciate your points of view, which have validity, and I believe come from an honest heart. I believe you are saying that your actions prove what you believe and if a person is perceptive, they can see you are a believer by your actions. I love your reverence for the perfect, holy, and loving God that Christians serve. I also want you to know there are Christians as you described, and there are Christians who are apostolic Pentecostal who follow the book of Acts 2:36-39 experience. This is the actual birthday of the church, period. The 325 AD church is a conglomerate of men's philosophy trying to describe the trinity, a man made word not found in the Bible. This is skewed in its doctrine and I apologize for that but want to clarify that there are those that have literally been born again of the water and the spirit, which Jesus spake to nicodemus about in John 3:5. You seem to understand the fall of man spoken about in 1 Corinthians 15 "many were made sinners by the first man Adam" and "many are made over-comers by the second man Christ Jesus". This is part of the purpose that Jesus came to earth. God is one. That is a verifiable theme throughout the Old Testament and the New Testament. The lamb in the Old Testament had to be perfect, without blemish. Hebrews 9 and 10 explain. And without the shedding of blood there is no remission of sins. Also the blood of bulls and goats could not take our sin away. So the perfect God you spoke about is perfect and man is unrighteousness. Romans 3:10 "As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one:" KJV Because of these facts, we have a dilemma. We have a perfect God that cannot be seen, caught, he cannot bleed or die, and there is no perfect man or woman, without blemish available. So John 1:1, 14; Isaiah 63:5; Isaiah 43:11 tells us that God made himself flesh and dwelt among us to pay the supreme sacrifice once and for all. So ALL of us have the option of taking that gift or born again experience talked about in Acts chapters 2:1-40, 10:1-6,44-48, 19:1-7. You may know about this, but then again maybe not. It doesn't matter to be about being controversial, because as you and the Bible say; to thine own self be true and don't lie. I feel strongly that you have an honest heart and therefore am presenting this to you. I have been born again of the water and the spirit, and my life was changed instantly. I have a Heavenly Father that is so good to me, and I love him very dearly. As I was watching this my heart was wanting to cry out to you yes he is holy and so far above us and so much holiness that, we are filthy in his sight, but he love us. The Bible is the greatest love story ever written about a God who loved us so much that he came to earth to manifest himself in the only way he could and bleed and die for us to atone for our sin. Thank you for all that you do that is good, I am praying for you and your family to experience this born again experience.

  25. Jordan definitely has a very optimistic view on humanity. Sadly, I'm not sure if I can believe what he is saying. I would like to but I don't think have the courage or audacity to think that even. He truly is a good spirit to have that kind of faith in us and believe in us, even when we don't believe in ourselves.

  26. Stay strong Mr Peterson. You have a wealth of people out here supporting you all over the world. You've spent so much time on us and helping all of us who struggle with life's challenges, so I hope you take all the time you need and more to recover.

  27. As a Biochemist Ph D – I predicted this outcome already 2 years ago, when Jordan began to cross the Jordan to become Icarus and get addicted to the sun god RA
falling deep into his own abyss RIP in Prof Dr. Peterson!

  28. I am 24 years old, and I wonder about how would my life look like if I discovered someone like Jordan Peterson ten years ago… that could make me feel guilty because of all the things I didn’t do because I didn’t know all tricks and knowledge Jordan gives us. However, I feel happy, because since I know him, I know lot much about me, and my English is far better since I watch Jordan without french subtilises. Jordan Peterson is great, because he wants to be great. And he proves every days to people we can be great too.

  29. Anyone: "If you could meet anyone, dead or alive, who would it be?

Me: (always, without hesitation.) "Dr.Jordan B Peterson."

  30. Hello, i write here cause i dont know what else do, i was really into changing myself, getting better, but in the past month ive been feeling really desperate cause i dont feel im improving. I want to be the first student at my class or even a good one (and im not a bad one BUT i dont use correctly my time. I really dont do it. The thing is, gosh, sometimes i just cant get into what i have to do, maybe cause is a lot, maybe cause i think is easy, also and this is very important, sometimes i really cant, like literally, my mind doesn't let me start and is horrible. I want to be better, i tried to focus in dedicating all my focus to study, and well, not that i just ignore other parts of my life but i think it doesn't matter. Maybe cause a girl i really like. She maybe pay attention to me but not in the way i like. And im afraid that i like her cause we study the same career and i don't know. In resume, im really sorry im saying these here. But i have to say it. Its a loop. And i need to say it maybe to liberate me a little. The loop is that i try to get better, i think im not enough for her and i think im not getting better at all. I think she is not the problem in general. But if she is how can i solve it.

  31. This man is under a huge amount of stress! He needs to be around loving family, friends, and fans for emotional support!

  32. Hi Jordan! I would love and appreciate it very much if you could comment and give your opinion on this! Do you think being an ABA practitioner is a worthy and fullfilling career path to take? I ask this because as you say in many of your videos – behaviorists are limited and I really feel that in my studies and with the methods they use..
I was a psych major and love a lot of what you have to say.
    Thank you.

  33. "IN THE BEGINNING WAS JESUS CHRIST, AND CHRIST WAS GOD. ALL THINGS WERE MADE BY HIM; AND WITHOUT HIM WAS NOT ANYTHING MADE THAT WAS MADE. HE WAS IN THE WORLD, AND THE WORLD WAS MADE BY HIM, AND THE WORLD KNEW HIM NOT." (JOHN 1:1,3,10)

  34. Dr. Peterson, we wish you well and look forward to seeing you when you are completely recovered. May God bless you and your family.

  35. I'm glad Peterson takes the fundamental tragedy of life seriously before he suggests there may be some hope. It is reassuring to hear someone who is neither blinded by nauseating platitudes nor dominated by cynical nihilism.

  36. Prof. Peterson, I join the millions of people who are sending their love and support. You have helped countless people who yearned for truthful guidance about life in a world that lost its way. Please take care. With deep respect & gratitude, Dr. ART.

  37. I'm not trolling just honestly curious why so many people take advice about life and mental health from a man who has a history of mental illness and addiction to drugs and medications?

  38. Why do I feel like people from say my dads golden era of the 1970s mostly would have no need for such advise about self worth? Almost as if prosperity and the ability to be a provider or meet a primal standard is of that much importance!

  39. Prayers to you believing my thoughts, letters, heart beat, and the words I speak project out into the universe and come back stronger as a reflection of who you are

I just found out about you Jordan and it has been amazing to listen to you speak
Your words have meaning and are impactful

I would love to talk to you one day
Hopefully I can overcome so I can

Thank you for your contributions to reality and know you're loved /

  40. I feel guilty for being alive. I want to get the hell off this planet I was never supposed to be here. I would trade places with your wife in a New York minute, if I could.

  41. I hope you’re doing better Jordan I’m thinking of you you’ve helped me through difficult times I’ve had family members that dealt with the struggle you’ve been through just remember who you are and what you’re capable of my friend

  42. Amazing wisdom here people. If there were a new version of the show "Father Knows Best"… it should star Mr. Peterson. If only they still made shows that instilled moral values. Stay blessed and connected.
