How to Start a Speech

How to Start a Speech

One of the first words you should say in a speech, and what are the last words you should say in a speech Now tomorrow, I don’t know how many of you are speaking, but I guarantee if you go to conferences 19 out of 20 speakers will start in one of these ways number one My name is Connor Neal. I’m from tango and this talk is about the latest trend in monitoring strategies Now all of you are sitting with a piece of paper in front of you. That says I’m Connor Neal I’ve come from Ireland, and I’m going to talk about tango 0-4 and this So by repeating what you already know? I’m giving a signal that it’s a time to get your BlackBerry out I’ve just signals that this talk is Opportunity to reconnect with blackberry make sure the office is ok, maybe get some plans together for the weekend Another way to start The lights and some of the mics working and how much time have I got Ok right ok Is it is it plugged in? and You laugh, but I guarantee tomorrow. There’s going to be some moments They get a little bit up And Why because this is for some of you the first time you see this individual. They’re here as a leader in their industry and Your kid at school presenting on giraffes does a better job That’s sad I Think there’s only three ways of starting a speech And it’s the same if you went into a bar and there’s a group of people as a networking event much like you were at before you walked into this room and Maybe I came up to a group There’s group of three people who are having a little conversation. I walk in and I say hi. I’m Connor I’m Irish 38 years old I have an interest in sailing. I like running And they’ve walked away How do you get people to engage with you when you’re networking I Say in networking the best thing you can do is walk up. I think we know someone in common Try and walk away when someone comes up and says that to you Hopefully, you’ve done your research, so you do know that you’ve know someone in common, but with LinkedIn You can find out who knows who on anyone you want? So how to start a speech? first way With a question that matters to the audience How do you phrase a problem that the audience faces in a question So that’d be the third best way of starting a speech The second best way of starting a speech with a factoid that shocks There’s more people alive today than have ever died More people alive today than have ever died There’s a lot of speeches that can follow on from there Every two minutes The energy reaching the earth from the Sun is equivalent to the whole annual usage of humanity All the energy all the cars everything moving all the lighting all the air conditioning of the world in One year is equivalent to two minutes of Sun Does that change how you think about energy So what’s a fact that shocks the audience into rethinking? and Google has transformed your ability to get at these facts Given two or three minutes you can find out one whether anything I’ve said is true But you trust me because I Look the part, and I’m from ESA those are in fact two true facts I Usually get someone come up to me and are you sure but how do they measure dead and alive But it’s true, and it’s not even close But the best way to Start a speech and the way that I hope all of you use from now forward is the same way We start a story to a child Now how do we start a story to a child? And I say oneth once upon a time And what happens when you say once upon a time I can tell you what happens when I say once upon a time my daughter leans forward gets ready to hear engages and We were all trained as kids to know when a story’s coming We also know when a teacher is about to deliver a 40 minute boring lecture that has no impact on our lives But in business You don’t hear him Jack Welsh saying once upon a time Steve Jobs doesn’t heart start his speeches once upon a time, so there’s a grown-up way of saying once upon a time and If you listen to the conversations that are interesting around you at a dinner table in A networking event if you listen to the people that are gathering the group of eight that are listening to them The way they’re talking is different the way they start is different The way you tell stories as an adult is in October was the last time I was in this room there were a hundred and twenty people in the room And I was having a little conversation with one of the world experts on public speaking and he said something to me He said something to me This had me thinking ever since He said something to me that changed What I think about what’s important in speaking? Now I can pause for about 30 seconds two or three minutes, and you want to know what he said So in Speaking in sales, we assume self-interest So if you can tell a story from your own life that Connects you to why this topic is important to you. Why you first joined the company when you first saw someone benefit And you saw how their life was changed, and I think here exploring what quality of life means for you in your business How do you affect quality of life for a customer? Because that’s where the stories that will start to connect you to the audience will come from Because stories are about people They’re not about objects they are not about things. It’s about the people behind the things If you want to tell a good story about Tango don’t talk about the software talk about the people who built the software What they do how they are what’s important to them what they sacrifice? And in your own life What does quality of life mean? What sacrifices have you made to achieve something that was more important and If you can tell stories and the audience connect with those stories then They want to hear what you have to say And all the reasons and all the benefits. They’re all written in the document and in the PowerPoint But they need to trust you And they need to care about you as a person to engage with you and then decide that they will act

  1. I was waiting for the concise information how to star and end a speech . However I dont how I got deviated from this topic to how to engage urself

  2. booo! There are currently seven billion people alive today and the Population Reference Bureau estimates that about 107 billion people have ever lived. This means that we are nowhere near close to having more alive than dead. In fact, there are 15 dead people for every person living. https://www.bbc.com/news/magazine-16870579

  3. so you are telling us, instead of talking about the software product someone is selling, we should talk about the people who built that software and what their sacrifices were and how they built that software. Why could customer care about all that information? They care about the value and ROI of that software and its impact on their bottom line, not the people who built it.

  4. more than 108 billion members of our species have ever been born https://www.prb.org/howmanypeoplehaveeverlivedonearth/

  5. He says "hopefully you've done your research" then shares incorrect information about the living and the dead LMAO This dude is not engaging in the slightest.

  6. Population vs. died is around 7.5 billion to 100 billion since 8000 b.c. so wrong by over a factor of 10. Not sure how accurate that solar energy statement is. Oh, and he never tells us what the adult way to say "once upon a time" WTF ?

  7. Nothing wrong with an introduction of self and topic, nothing at all. I am of the opinion that an introduction of self and topic right at the beginning is logical, friendly and welcoming to the audience. This once upon a time thing is patronizing, and although fine for the younger crowd up to high schoolers, it is not for college lectures or among colleagues. What I find abhorrent, are the people that dive right in and talk for two minutes on their topic, pause and say, "Hi, I'm Bla Bla Bla, and I'm here to tell you that everything you ever did was wrong….."

  8. How to start a speech… BE A HOT BLONDE WITH BIG BOOBS AND SHOW CLEAVAGE… that will get everyone's attention… screw this guy's advice.

  9. Video starts at 2:56 You're welcome. "How to start a speech…" By getting to the damn point first… stop ramblings like a woman with fill-ins. DUH

  10. "There are more people alive today then ever died" and then he goes on to say that it is a true fact ? ignorining the use of true and fact together – it is a known fact that it is infact not true that there are more people living today then ever died

  13. god damn Conor you are dragging out the facts…… timewast…. to use your 8 min, (sorry im bored with all your breaks and non interesting "fill in" words.

  14. Sorry. The claim that more people are alive today than have ever liver (3.30) is a myth. If someone started their speech like this I would get up and leave, as I would lose trust in their ability to identify trustworthy knowledge.

  15. 4:12 IS BRILLIANT. i do conduct finance induction once in a month to new joiners and when i start , I crack a situational joke; Like say, can someone call those outstanding people (candidates wandering out of the conf room) inside, tell them this wont be avbl on youtube

  16. Nonsense: "Now there are more people alive than have ever died". It is not just 7 billion that have ever lived. A little over 100 billion people have ever lived.

  17. I usually start my speech first by taking out my handkerchief and wiping my brow, then adjust my glasses and necktie then shuffle my papers as I gauge the audience.

  18. OK.. But after nearly 9 mins I learned little.. Could have got to the point much quicker. Potentially suffers from the same as many speakers… that need to fill a 20/30/40 min slot.. Acid test ..was I getting bored waiting for the point??

  19. There are not more people alive today than has ever lived. An estimated 105 billion people have lived, there are 7.7 billion ppl alive today, his facts are like CNN.

  20. I enjoyed listening to Conor's advice. I, however, had a problem with watching him as his non verbal language distracts considerably. He continuously touches his nose or puts his hands in front of his face, mouth. Also the rubbing of his hands signals something like ‘got you’.

  21. 108,470,690,115 have been born as of 2019. 7,536,000,000 are alive atm. More people are dead then were alive. https://www.prb.org/howmanypeoplehaveeverlivedonearth/
I think you need to work on fact checking.

  22. I really like the term "Homeowner Coach". I am happy to be a new addition to the Allen Tate team. Thank you for having me from the previous Blowing Rock Investment Properties, Blowing Rock, NC

  23. Do you need assistance with your Persuasive Speech, Informative Speech, Graduation Speech, Keynote Speech ? Search no more, Contact Us at [email protected] and we will be glad to provide you top notch services.

  24. LOL… How do you trap Cy Young in his next life and a few others to an underground motel's hidden zoning box that is hundreds of miles deep and use him as an example for others manipulations and wrong doings which they caused onto themselves by their own tamperings and recordings ? LOL. Take penis from Spruce Bruce Goose and play with toaster wires around Satan's head that created God. lol. And possibly stem cell in disneyland ! lol.

  25. I watched the entire video and still did not get what are the first few words to start a speech. He ended up saying to tell a story. People always do. Specially Business School graduates are nothing but story tellers. They do nothing for an organization, they are not great problem solver either. A mere story teller who demands highest remuneration. People who actually solves the problem are at the bottom of the pyramid. This style won't help in this century. MBA graduates to mange are the thing of the past century. In this century you will need great problem solvers, domain experts and hands-on manager.

  26. So after listening 4 for 8 minutes 46 seconds of mostly waffle he never did say with an example how to start a speech. Would have got my Blackberry out from the start if I'd realised this was a load of old hogwash!

  27. "more people alive now than have died" — "you can look it up" — I did and it's bs. Do not listen to bullshitters. https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/fact-or-fiction-living-outnumber-dead/

  28. Love the tips. We are here to help reduce the rate of drownings and increase fun while providing a product that adds safety in and around water.

  29. I loved this talk however when he quotes facts that are wrong he loses credibility which is what he is selling, his own credibility. People who have died over history is estimated at about 107 billion people who are alive; about 7billion.

  30. First way, with a question that matters to the audience. How do you phrase a problem that the audience faces in a question?
Second best way of starting a speech with a factoid that shocks. What's a face that shocks the audience into rethinking?
The best way will be the same way how we start a story (example: not how the product is made, but what are the stories behind that, how sacrifice ppl do to achieve it, etc. STORY!)
