Strategies to help you get promoted at work – Personality Development and Interpersonal skills

Hello everyone you’re with me Niharika and
welcome to Skillopedia. The place to learn skills for the real world. Do you think that
climbing up to the corporate ladder is pretty tough? But if you want a job that excites
you and of course pays you well, then you will have to climb it at some point. So which
means, you want to get promoted. Great! Get in the line, reason because there are many
people, who really want to work hard and of course improve their career prospects. So
how do you do that? Well, in today’s session I have some tips for you that would help you
to plan a promotion. The first tip that I have for you is start with a self-assessment. Now before you gear up to request a promotion, it’s important for you to look at yourself,
your accomplishments, the things that you have achieved and of course the perspectives
and the views of your boss, of your co-workers and your clients and customers about you,
now it is important to understand that how good you perform and this can be only known
if your boss appreciates or if your clients appreciate. You also need to do a good check
on your work ethics. Now this will help you to sell yourself, which means that this will
help you to put in a request for a promotion. So go ahead and start a self-assessment on
your performance. The second tip that I have for you have a strong relationship with the
seniors in the company. Now this really helps, this would definitely open a lot of doors
for you. The opportunities that come, when you have a strong relationship with your seniors.
Now this also helps you to understand what the organization is all about? How they work?
What kind of job you would have to do, if you get promoted? This doesn’t mean that
you start boot licking that is wrong. Do not boot lick others or your seniors, just have a
good, positive, strong relationship with your seniors. Now also this will help seniors to
understand your strengths, your abilities and know your value towards the organization.
So what next you have to do is start building a good rapport and a good relationship with
your managers and with your seniors. The next tip that I have for you is ask for more responsibilities. It’s important for you to volunteer for more work, this shows your desire to work
more for the company and of courses increases your value towards the organization. Now there
are many people in the world, who do only those jobs, which they are asked to do, but
that should change for you. You should try to build a reputation, where the seniors are
completely dependent on you. Like the seniors would come up to you and say that yes you
are the person, who can accomplish this. So isn’t that great? This will open the doors
of opportunities. So go ahead and take more responsibilities, show that you have so much
interest in this organization and you definitely want to attain success. Now also when you
take up a lot of work, you need to accomplish it well, doesn’t mean that you know, My
god this is like too much of work for me and you don’t do a good job on it. It’s important
for you to ask for more responsibilities and of course make these responsibilities successful.
So what do you do? Ask for more responsibilities. The forth tip that I have for you is acquire
more knowledge and skills. Now you definitely have the skills and the education and of course
the experience to get this current job. But when we talk about promotion, the seniors
are looking for something more.Your hard work definitely pays, but it’s important for
you to work on your knowledge and your skills further. Now technology is constantly changing
and it’s really rapid, so if you just stay with the same old skills or the same old knowledge.
Do you think you will be able to perform well? Definitely not, so try to understand what
new skillsets are required in order to get promoted and of course increase your knowledge
by watching news, reading a lot. Well, internet is such a blessing, so go ahead and start
reading not just related to your industry, but you should also have knowledge about the
other industries. This will help you to increase your value for the organization. The last tip that I have for you is, prepare yourself for a no. It’s not necessary when you apply
for a promotion, you will get promoted? Well, if you are denied a promotion, it’s okay,
don’t give up a no doesn’t mean end of the world. You can re-apply just within six
months. Am I right? So do not give up, but make sure that you thank your manager for
the time and of course for the things that you have discussed. Now it’s the best time
to lay your foundations for the future, so start working hard, start building relationship
with your seniors and also follow the tips that I mentioned. This will help you to get
promoted the next time the opportunity is open for you. So please don’t give up and
be prepared for a no. So if you want to sell yourself for a promotion, please do follow
these tips and let me know if you have something more to share. And I’ll be back with a new
session soon. Till then you take care and do subscribe to our channel Skillopedia – The

  10. how to satisfy an employee if he didn't get promoted while according to him he should promoted but according to company he should not. how can justify ?

  11. It's a really good video with plenty of helpful tips, however, I think alot of it depends on one crucial factor that being office politics…I remember being guided by similar tips years ago in a job and when it came to promotion I recall being told "we can't give you this promotion because Mary was next in line but there's something coming up in a few months and you'll definitely get that because it'll be your turn next"…needless to say when the next opportunity did come up and I was asked if I wanted to be considered for it (in other words have it given to me) I declined…

When challenged about my decision I explained that when I didn't get the last one it gave me time to reflect on my current role and I realised that I loved what I did and that management had told me numerous times that they could rely on me in my current role so it would be best for the company if I remained where I was…they accepted my decision after trying to persuade me otherwise but the truth of the matter was that even though I didn't mind my current role it was more about not wanting to be in a "Q" for a new role rather than it being based on merit…needless to say I remained in the same role for many years, seen others come in after me moving up but I was o.k. with that because I didn't want to be part of the "political world"….

  12. Thanks Niharika for all the tips you have shared. I am not very good at initiating conversations and therefore unable to built "positive relationships' with my seniors. Would request you to share some tips on that. I must thank you, you're doing great! Keep up the good work 🙂
